In its most basic sense, birding, or bird watching, is the recreational hobby of observing species of wild birds, including their physical characteristics and behavior. There are more than 50 million birders in the United States and millions more throughout the world, making birding one of the most popular and most rapidly growing hobbies in the world.

Birding Google Map
We would use the Google Map to familiarize the students in our third grade classroom with New Zealand, the country where our pen pal students live. We would point out that it is an island nation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, helping us to illustrate (simply) the reasons for the climate and seasons of New Zealand. As the closure of the pen pal portion of our project, the students in our classroom will use the Google Map to drop a pin in the area of New Zealand in which the favorite bird of their pen pal lives. Students will illustrate the pins with a photograph of the bird and add a label that gives more information about the bird.
*The three of us met in person on Thursday evening, 09/25/14, and completed this portion of the project together, though it was typed and added to the blog by Kelli.
